Damandiri Foundation’s aid in enhancing learning motivation to the180 less fortunate students of SMA N I Jampang Kulon, Sukabumi West Java is very effective. The training helps them to acquire business skills and confidence to start their own business one day. They are trained to assemble computer and automotive equipment, also sewing their own uniform and printing on banners. The program is provided by Damandiri Foundation and Social Service Institution (LPM) of Bogor Agriculture Institute (IPB) in their School Based Family Empowerment Post activity
Struggling to catch up in education, health and economy sectors, Sukabumi Regency, West Java will keep developing their people by using better strategies. The strategy they have just begun to use among others is making school based family empowerment posts to be their key of family work force development in Sukabumi.
“Posdaya (Family Empowerment Post) is a very good idea, for it touches the targets: less fortunate students,” said Iyep Budiman who is responsible in Posdaya program of SMA N I Jampang Kulon.
In two years, he acknowledges that the existence of Posdaya has pushed students of SMA N I Jampang Kulon to endeavor continuing their education until they receive their college degree. The program enables them to be self reliante by giving them life skills, such as sewing etc.
“Everybody needs clothes, which is why sewing skills is also a basic need to develop entrepreneurship. Lucky us, we have a teacher who can provide the training they need.”
Besides sewing, the program trains them to acquire printing skills that makes students able to create banners. “We hope that they can be self reliant and begin their own businesses when they finish their education here. Thank God, the 2007 graduates have started their own businesses.”
In 2007 the program in SMA N I Jampang Kulon trained 20 students, 10 males and 10 females. Eight students chose printing skills and the other 12 students learned sewing skills that was scheduled for 2 hours theory and 3 hours practice every week. They thank Damandiri Foundation for the sewing machines they have bought for them.
“Actually we have other programs that can be taken by the students, like baking cakes. We have even opened a garage,” he continued. The people around SMA N I Jampang Kulon supported the program very much.
The auto motive training provided did not go so well due to the classic financial problems and lack of trainers, and also in IT training. He hopes that they can get trainers for the software and hardware skills. He has high hopes that one day his students can assemble computers and sell them.
Custom made uniform
The vice principal of SMA N I Jampang Kulon, Mr. Dudin, said that the printing training has produced various printings for their own needs. The students are able to make sports gear uniforms for their friends. Their sports gear is unique, really custom made uniforms.
They started by designing and choosing the right material. They designed, sewed and printed the sport gears themselves. For this hard work, they were provided with special training. Our trainers taught them from how to choose the material, how to measure, make the pattern, cut the material and how to sew and do the finishing touches that are most loved by teenagers.
“They wore their first products proudly, before trying to make clothes for their parents and family. When their skills got better and better, they dared to sell them to their friends and the public,” explained Mr. Dudin, the vice principal of SMA N I Jampang Kulon.
Journalistic skills enabled them to make their own school bulletin that presents much information over technology, education, health and youth entertainment they needed.
For getting more health information, and to prevent sexual problems such as: unwanted pregnancy, spread of HIV/AIDS, sexual harassment and forbidden sexual activities that have medical, psychological, economic and social impacts, they invited midwives from the community healthcare center to give information on reproductive health.
“Teenagers are high potential resources so that their awareness over their reproductive health should be awakened. We don’t want them to risk their future. Youth issues are interesting to discuss. Data shows that 37% of the Indonesian population is teenagers. They are in a transition phase, from childhood to adulthood that needs our attention in caring for their physical and mental health.”
SMA N I Jampang Kulon won many trophies in volley ball games, and art competitions that made it famous in West Java. They still hope that with Posdaya’s assistance the people around them can become more dynamic in managing their potential and can together enhance their education, health and entrepreneurship.
